How do we feel and react when something in our lives changes?
How do we react when there's a sudden change in our schedule, for example?
Are we able to accept the change easily or do we feel irritated because things are not the same as before?
Are some kinds of change easier to deal with than others?
What kind of responses to change have we seen with COVID-19?
(On the back of your KWL charts). Read and respond to the quote below: What does it mean to build a wall vs a windmill?

This reading explores how a simple fire evacuation can quickly become complex as factors such as obstacles and human behavior become involved.
Why do you think this is based on the open discussion we had?
What two words do you think combine to make the word Simplexity? Why do think?
Following the attacks on September 11, 2001, more than 13,000 people safely evacuated the World Trade Center towers before the two buildings collapsed. These survivors reacted in different ways. Some rushed directly to emergency exits. Some first saved their work and shut down their computers. Others paused to change their shoes or to visit the restroom. Jeffrey Kluger (b. 1954), author of several books on science topics and senior editor at Time magazine, explains how differences in behavior can make a simple process like evacuating a building very complex.
For additional context, let's watch part of Turning Point 9/11 (Netflix).
Why do we conduct fire, disaster, or emergency drills?

KWL Charts - Fill out the K column (What you know), and the W column (what you want to know). Later, we'll return to these and consider what you've learned.
Free write: On the back, I want you to write down your own response to change as well as your response to change during COVID-19. Here are some questions to help you generate writing ideas:
How would you rate your response to change in general? What about family and friends around you?
What about your response to all the changes happening because of COVID-19? Family, friends?
Why do you think this is how you respond, and how your family/friends respond to change?
Why do you think change can be easy or difficult?
Read and annotate the text (the first R in SQRRRL) in order to answer the guiding questions (preview the questions before you start your reading). You can underline, highlight, write out reactions, as well as circle or note on things you don't understand. There is no particularly right or wrong way to annotate a text. It's a way for YOU to track YOUR thinking and reactions as you read.
You will turn in your annotations (when all questions and steps are completed). Your annotations are part of your grade for this reading.

What does Kluger’s analysis of responses during an evacuation tell you about human nature? Write an analysis using evidence from the text as well as your own experience. Use what you wrote in your About Me revisions to get started.
Reread Simplexity, making notes about how humans behave in crisis situations and why.
Add to your notes your own thoughts about how you might react as well as evidence from real-life events, like what you talked about in your About Me.
Use your notes to draft four paragraphs explaining your thesis about why people act as they do during a crisis. Use the first sentence in the prompt to help start you on a thesis statement.
Organize your ideas in cause-and effect order to make your points clear to readers. Remember to use transition words.
